LastPass hacked second time in Just six months
“The free password manager has already been hacked twice in 2022, and executives don’t know what customer info was stolen”
Why? Well, the password manager just got hacked. Still. Twice six months. Not great for a company that is supposed to keep your digital keys safe!
In a blog post on Wednesday, LastPass acknowledged that in a recent incident, a hacker was able to access “certain elements” of “customer information.” What kind of information? Unclear. Not very helpful!
LastPass said no customer passwords were affected by the incident: “Our customers’ passwords remain securely encrypted thanks to LastPass’ Zero Knowledge architecture.”
However, the company also hinted that it’s not entirely sure what customer information was accessed (and presumably stolen). “We are working hard to understand the scope of the incident and identify the specific information that was accessed,” LastPass CEO Karim Toubba wrote on the blog.
“In line with our commitment to transparency, I would like to inform you of a security incident that our team is currently investigating,” Toubba wrote. “We recently detected unusual activity in a third-party cloud storage service, currently shared by LastPass and its subsidiary, GoTo.

We immediately conducted an investigation, thanks to the involvement of Mandiant, a leading security company, and reported to law enforcement.
This most recent incident is actually the result of a previous LastPass security incident that took place in August. In this episode, LastPass officials “discovered unusual activity in certain parts of the environment” develop LastPass.
” At the time, the company said there was “no evidence” that the incident exposed “customer data or encrypted password vaults”. However, it appears that the culprit of this problem managed to get into LastPass and obtain some customer data, although again, we don’t know what kind.
“We have determined that an unauthorized party, using information obtained during the August 2022 incident, was able to access certain elements of our customer information,” Toubba said. Gizmodo has reached out to LastPass for more details and will update this story if they respond.
Of course, this isn’t the first time LastPass has had security issues. It’s part of an age-old pattern. The company seems to have been making some sort of mistake online for a year or two. From a mysterious security issue in 2011 to a hack in 2015 to vulnerabilities discovered in 2016, 2017 and 2019, LastPass has had a number of issues.
This recent episode adds to its beleaguered history. No one said security was easy, but you’d hope a company whose entire business is securing your passwords could handle this better.
