This guide contains a wealth of news and information on The Rings of Power season 2, which will be available on Prime Video soon. This contains a possible premiere date, cast announcements, story beats, the show’s future, and other details.

Major spoilers follow for The Rings of Power season 1Potential spoilers for its sophomore year are also incoming.

THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON 2: RELEASE DATE

The Rings of Power season 2: release date

The Rings of Power season 2 doesn’t have yet to be announced. As of March, the next episode of the series had “five months” of filming left, according to the Fellowship of Fans Twitter account. If that’s the case, season 2 should end in August.

When asked about a possible release date, Amazon Studios co-head Jennifer Salke told Esquire that everyone wants to get season 2 “out into the world as soon as we possibly can.” Vernon Sanders, Salke’s co-head, told Collider that it’s “more unlikely than likely” that it’ll come in 2023.

The Rings of Power season 2 will not be released before 2024. The second season of Amazon’s other pricey high fantasy series, The Wheel of Time, will be released this year, so you’ll have some fantasy genre material to enjoy. Meanwhile, The Making of The Rings of Power, a documentary on season 1’s development, is now available on Amazon’s streaming site.

The Rings of Power season 1 finale reveals that Halbrand is indeed Sauron. Vickers will now be playing the iconic villain from The Lord of the Rings.

Meanwhile, Lenny Henry’s Sadoc Burrows and The Mystics will not return. Sadoc died in episode 8 after being fatally injured during a confrontation between The Stranger, Harfoots, and The Mystics, with the latter being destroyed by The Stranger during the same fight.

Alex Tarrant’s Valandil, Geoff Morrell’s Waldreg, Peter Mullan as King Durin III, Maxine Cunliffe as Vilma, and Thusitha Jayasundera as Malva are five important supporting cast members we anticipate will return. The appearances of Vilma and Malva, on the other hand, are contingent on whether we meet the Harfoot village again (more on this later).

In other news, The Rings of Power season 2 has added a big name star to its cast. Sam Hazeldine (Peaky Blinders) has taken over for Joseph Mawle, who played Adar. Meanwhile, 17 more performers have been added to the roster. Six were announced in the press release announcing Mawle’s resignation, eight more were forged in the fires of Mount Doom (metaphorically speaking), and most recently, James Bond, Star Wars, and Harry Potter luminaries were added to the show’s ranks. More information can be found below:

  • William Chubb (The Sandman)
  • Kevin Eldon (Game of Thrones)
  • Will Keen (His Dark Materials)
  • Selina Lo (Hellraiser)
  • Calum Lynch (Bridgerton, Derry Girls)
  • Stuart Bowman (Alex Rider)
  • Gavi Singh Chera (The Lazarus Project)
  • Oliver Alvin-Wilson (Lovesick)
  • Ben Daniels (Jupiter’s Legacy)
  • Yasen “Zates” Atour (Young Wallander)
  • Gabriel Akuwudike (1917)
  • Nia Towle (Persuasion)
  • Nicholas Woodeson (Rome)
  • Amelia Kenworthy (in her first major acting role)
  • Ciaran Hinds (Harry Potter, Treason)
  • Rory Kinnear (James Bond)
  • Tanya Moodie (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker)

Cirdan the Shipwright is one figure who has been confirmed to appear. Cirdan was Lord of the Falathrim in the First Age and owned one of the titular rings, Narya, before passing it on to Gandalf, according to Tolkien’s source material. Cirdan will have a “important influence” on Benjamin Walker, who plays High King Gil-galad, according to Nerdist.

Cirdan isn’t the only elf who could appear. Galadriel mentions Celeborn, the elf she is married to, in episode 7. Galadriel currently believes he is dead, but Tolkien enthusiasts know he is not. The two finally reunite before settling in Lothlórien.

Patrick McKay, co-showrunner, refused to confirm Celeborn’s appearance at a screening event for episodes 6 and 7. “We know there are things that the two of them do together in terms of progeny that they will issue, realms that they will find, all kinds of things,” he teased. So it would be difficult for her to believe she would never see him again. But we’ll see.”

In other news, Charles Edwards, who plays Celebrimbor, would like to see a deep-cut dwarf character make their live-action debut in season 2 of The Rings of Power. According to TheOneRing.net, Tom Bombadil will also appear in some manner.

The Fellowship of Fans reports that newcomer Jamie Bisping has been cast as Viran (it’s unclear if this is a codename). According to the Fellowship of Fans, William Chubb will play a Nmenórean high priest named Lord Belzagar, and Nichola Woodeson will play a Pelargir character named Diarmid (no word on whether this is his real name). Meanwhile, The Witcher fansite Redanian Intelligence claims Celesta Dodwell (Atlanta) has been cast in an unspecified capacity, and Nia Towle’s nameless character collaborates with Isildur.

Finally, with the first Rings of Power made in episode 8, we may expect to see the remaining 17 forged in The Rings of Power season 2. If this occurs, figures such as Khamûl the Easterling, one of the Ringwraiths, could make their live-action debut.

THE RINGS OF POWER SEASON 2 TRAILER: IS THERE ONE?

Nope. We’ll let you know when one is available (whenever that is).

The Rings of Power season 2: Show’s Future

The Rings of Power season 2: Show’s Future

The Rings of Power season 2 will not be the final installment. Payne and McKay have planned five seasons, which are already in the works. Although Amazon has only greenlit two seasons, Vernon Sanders, co-head of Amazon Studios, stated (via Deadline): “We’re probably two to three months into season 3, but I think there could be news certainly in the new year.”

It’s uncertain how Embracer Group’s acquisition of The Lord of the Rings IP will influence season 3 and subsequent seasons – executive producer Lindsey Weber is unsure how it will affect the series. Furthermore, The Guardian reports that Warner Bros. Discovery is producing new Lord of the Rings films, including the upcoming War of the Rohirrim animated film, which will further confuse the waters.

For what it’s worth, The Rings of Power topped Nielsen’s television ratings in September 2022. Meanwhile, its two-part premiere was watched by 25 million people in the first 24 hours, making it the most-watched Prime Video show ever. In summary, don’t anticipate The Rings of Power season 2 (or even season 3) to be the final installment.
