These details about the cast and future Starz release of Outlander Season 8 are current as of right now.

Following inspiration from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novel series, the show revolves around a WWII nurse who is transported back in time to 1743 and develops romantic feelings for a Highland warrior.

Across centuries of human history, the program featured some of the most significant battles and public events to have ever occurred in the United States and around the world. It soon rose to the top of the game’s historical drama rankings.

When Is Outlander Season 8 Releasing?

In January 2023, Deadline revealed that Starz had renewed Outlander for an eighth season, with the confirmation that this would be the show’s final season.

Though a start date was set before the labor stoppage, series actor Caitriona Balfe said to Radio Times that the writers’ strike caused production for Season 8 to be delayed:

“Well, our date went well. Who knows, even with the writers’ strike going on? Thus, all we can do is wait and see.”

According to this comment, Outlander Season 8 was scheduled to begin production, which suggests that locations and sets were ready for filming prior to Hollywood’s closure.

Additionally, Balfe stated to Express in May 2023 that filming would begin “in a few months,” however no precise start date was given:

“We’re about to start shooting, in a few months, our eighth season but our seventh season is starting to air on June 16th on Lionsgate+.”

Since both the writers’ and actors’ strikes ended in November, filming may get underway rather swiftly.

As a point of reference, Season 7 filming lasted 220 days, from May 2022 to February 2023 (as confirmed by star Sam Heughan on Instagram). The season premiered on June 16, 2023.

Then, in November 2023, Heughan posted a picture of himself in front of a large Outlander sign on Instagram (via TV Insider). The comments, “Season 8…” and “prep,” suggested that he was getting ready to resume production on the show.

If filming for Season 8 begins in 2024, it will probably continue for the majority of that year and potentially even into early 2025.

Fans shouldn’t expect Outlander Season 8 to premiere until at least late 2025, if at all. There’s a greater likelihood that the season won’t return until winter or spring of that year.

Although the cast of Season 8 has not yet been announced, a few significant performers from the first seven seasons will most likely be making a comeback.

Anticipated to make a comeback is Sam Heughan as the youthful Scot Jamie MacKenzie Fraser, who is shown as rather well-educated and sophisticated considering his 18th-century background. Before he even begins his time-bending connection with Claire, he is even bestowed with the title Laird of Broch Taurach.

With Sophie Skelton playing Claire and Jamie’s daughter Brianna again, the character should be welcomed back. Born and raised in Boston during the 20th century, Brianna must wait until she is a young adult to discover the truth about her ancestry.

In Outlander Season 8, Richard Rankin is also anticipated to return in the role of Roger, the MacKenzie line’s direct ancestor and the adopted son of Reverend Wakefield. After a while, he develops feelings for Brianna, and the two of them begin a family that eventually produces three kids.

Before the Battle of Prestonpans, Lord John Grey (David Berry) first met Jamie and Claire. After Jamie spares his life in Season 2, the two get fairly close over the years.

Charles Vandervaart, who debuted in Season 2, ought to return as William Ransom, Jamie’s paternal uncle and the son of Lord Ellesmere and Geneva Dunsany.

In addition, one might anticipate the return of John Bell’s Ian Fraser Murray, who plays a significant part as the son of Ian Murray and Jenny Fraser.

Outlander Season 8 will be based on the ninth book in the series, Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone, which comes before a 10th novel that will be released at a later date. The show Outlander constantly follows the plot developed in the original Outlander series.

Although Sam Heughan said to Business Insider that he is sworn to secrecy about the details and understands what occurs in the story, it is uncertain if the 10th book will be featured in Season 8’s plot.

In this story, it seems that time travel has caused some cardiac harm to Brianna, as Claire determines that she has atrial fibrillation. William, on the other hand, meets someone who thinks he is Lord John’s son when he returns to his Virginia farm.

Later in the novel, when Brianna encounters a new time traveler and becomes pregnant, other love interactions start when she receives a commission to paint a portrait for a wealthy Savanah couple.

Speaking with Radio Times, executive producer Maril Davis also addressed the show’s conclusion, informing viewers that she and the team have had numerous conversations with Diana Gabaldon over the series’ finish. After that, they will acquire the go-ahead for development after running the ending past the book’s author:

We’ve spoken with Diana briefly. We’ll run it by her to make sure she’s comfortable with it once we work out the actual finale, which we still haven’t fully figured out.”

In order to avoid stepping on any toes, Davis made it apparent to the supporters that the team “wants to repay [Gabaldon] and be respectful of her” and do the stories she penned justice:

“I’ve asked her about the actions we should take to make sure she’s okay. We don’t want to infringe upon Diana’s rights; she has been incredibly gracious and supportive of this series, and we are quite happy with its progress. We wish to honor her, pay her back, and properly represent her books.”

Looking back to the conclusion of Season 7, the American Revolutionary War in the 1770s will challenge Claire and Jamie’s relationship, with their entire family caught in the crossfire.

Season 8 will give those two plenty of action and airtime to send them go with the most fitting finish possible, because they and their love are the focal point of the entire Outlander saga.

Since Gabaldon’s tenth book has not yet been published, there are still many unanswered questions that could significantly affect the plot of the final season.

However, given that Outlander hasn’t shied away from deviating from its original material in previous seasons, that might not be as big of a problem this time around—especially with Gabaldon having such tight ties to the TV show’s production crew.

Outlander Season 8 is waiting for filming to begin, and it hasn’t yet a release date.
